MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team turned in one of its best performances of the season Sunday, taking down SIUE, 5-1, at Skyhawk Soccer Field in Martin on Senior Day.
UT Martin took control of the match early when Ava Huntrods and Add McCleary set up Peyton Cook for a goal in the fifth minute. Fourteen minutes later, Huntrods assisted Allie Buchmann on her goal that gave the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead. Alexandra Weihs took a feed from Unni Wolf and Ayja McCleary to give their team a 3-0 lead at the break.
Just minutes into the second half, Wolf scored a goal of her own off passes from Abbie McHenry and Cook. In the 74th minute, Cook capped the scoring for UT Martin with her second goal of the day with an assist from Caroline Moore. With just 33 seconds left in the match, the Cougars broke up the shutout bid from the Skyhawks on a goal from Akeelah Omokhua, but it was too little, too late for SIUE, as UT Martin walked away with the 5-1 win.
Mac Titus played just over seventy-five minutes in the match and made three saves. Molly Corgan finished out match, allowing just one goal with two saves. The Skyhawks took 24 shots in the match, placing 17 on frame, while SIUE took 13 shots with six on goal. The five goals by UT Martin were not only a season high, but marked the first time since 2020 that the Skyhawks have scored at least five goals.
With the win, the Skyhawks secured the sixth seed in this week's OVC Women's Soccer Championship. UT Martin will take on seventh-seeded SIUE Thursday at 3 p.m. at Lindenwood in Saint Charles, Missouri.
