FOUR FORMER SKYHAWKS FURTHERING THEIR BASKETBALL CAREERS
MARTIN, Tenn. – Former University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball standouts Twymond Howard, Jacolby Mobley, Kedar Edwards and Javier Martinez have found success overseas against some of the best competition in the world.
Howard, who played for the Skyhawks from 2014-16, signed a professional contract with the Aloe Plus Lanzarote Conejero squad, one of 16 teams in the EBA Basketball League Group B. The forward from Pearl, Miss. is currently playing for head coach Samuel Sosa for the team based out of Arrecife, Spain.
The 6-6, 210-pound Howard earned Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer honors in 2014-15 before garnering a spot on the All-OVC first team as a senior. His 2015-16 campaign ranks in the top-10 in UT Martin single-season history in points (529, 10th), free throws made (133, eighth) and free throw attempts (180, seventh).
Mobley inked a professional deal with the Mgzavrebi-Armia Tbilisi team, who competes in the eight-team Superleague. The 6-0 guard, who competed for the Skyhawks from 2015-17, will suit up for the team located in Tbilisi, Georgia and is coached by Anatoli Berishvili.
A Starkville, Miss. native, the 160-pound Mobley captured All-OVC first team accolades last season – ranking in the top-10 in single-season points (566, seventh) and three-point field goals made (95, fifth). His 160 career three-pointers ranks sixth all-time in UT Martin history.
A 6-5 forward, Edwards has signed a professional contract to play for the Saenz Horeca Araberri out of the 18-team LEB Gold League. Edwards is actively playing for head coach Antonio Perez for the team based out of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.
Edwards made school history last season after the 6-5, 200-pound forward became just the third different Skyhawk to accumulate a triple-double when he posted a stat line of 15 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds against Bethune-Cookman. The Brooklyn, NY native posted 643 points, 421 rebounds, 187 assists, 98 steals and 34 blocks in 63 games from 2015-17.
Martinez has spent most of the summer playing for former Toronto Raptors and Milwaukee Bucks head coach Sam Mitchell on the US Virgin Islands national team. A St. Croix native, Martinez recently took part in the 12-team 2017 FIBA AmeriCup tournament, which was held from Aug. 25 through Sept. 3 in Argentina and Spain.
A 6-7, 210-pound forward, Martinez blossomed into one of the best players in the OVC in 2016-17. He was named to the All-OVC second team after ranking third in the nation in field goal percentage (.671) and eighth in school history with 266 rebounds – capping off a four-year career where he connected on 67.2 percent of his shot attempts.
These four Skyhawks helped lead UT Martin to 63 wins from 2014-17 – the most in any three-year span in school history. The Skyhawks also won at least one postseason game in all three of those seasons, becoming the only OVC program to accomplish that feat.
