GOLF TEAM COMPLETES FIRST TWO ROUNDS AT MURRAY STATE INVITATIONAL

MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team is within striking distance of a top-five finish after two rounds of play at the Murray State Invitational at Miller Golf Course.

The Skyhawks are currently in sixth place with a cumulative score of 580 (+12) through Monday’s first two rounds. UT Martin shot a 293 (+9) in the first round before improving for a second round score of 287 (+3).

The UT Martin “B” team is responsible for a 612 score (+44) through Monday’s action, sitting in 13th place.  The Skyhawk “B” team compiled totals of 302 (+18) in the first round followed by a 310 (+26) in the second round.

Alabama State and Lipscomb (571, +3) share the tournament lead going into the final day.

The Skyhawks did not receive a chance to get a practice round in on Sunday due to heavy rains in the western Kentucky area. That factor, along with a new set of Bermuda greens installed at Miller Golf Course this summer, meant UT Martin’s teams had to adjust on the fly during the first two rounds.

“We played up and down,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “We drove the ball well today but we didn’t putt well in the first round. We had a lot of 8-10 foot birdie putts that we just didn’t convert and that will make a big difference in your scores. We didn’t hit enough greens in regulation in the first round so we had to chip out and weren’t always getting consistent rolls because the ball doesn’t always react the same way on new greens. With that said, we will be ready to play tomorrow.”

Freshman Austin Swafford’s steady play led UT Martin through the first two rounds, as shot a 72 in the first round and 73 in the second round to sit at 145 (+3). Brendon Caballero was tied for second with a first-round 68 before finishing with a 146 (+4) total on the day. Tyler Guy (147, +5) shot even-par during Round 2 today, while Clay Harbin (149, +7) fired a two-under 69 second round that included an eagle. Ben Reeves (151, +9) concluded the scoring for the Skyhawks.

For the “B” team, Tyler Shellnut battled an illness to fire a low-round 67 this morning before settling in at 144 (+2). Peyton Deming compiled a score of 154 (+12), followed closely behind by Gavin Shellnut (155, +13) and John Michael Sisinni (159, +17).

The third and final round of play will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Skyhawks are set to tee off at 9 a.m.
