BASEBALL TEAM RETURNS TO ACTION THIS WEEKEND AT SIUE AFTER LENGTHY LAYOFF
MARTIN, Tenn. - After a lengthy layoff, The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will return to the diamond when it travels to SIU Edwardsville this weekend for an Ohio Valley Conference showdown. First pitch times in the series are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, May 3 and 1 p.m. on both Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5.
The Skyhawks (10-30, 3-18 OVC) had a three-game home series against Indiana State get washed out last weekend and did not have any midweek games scheduled this week because of final exams.
The last time UT Martin took the field was on Tuesday, April 23 at Central Arkansas. In that game, the Skyhawks crushed a season-best five homers before a late Central Arkansas rally led to a 16-8 win. Grant Glasser accounted for two round-trippers out of the leadoff spot for UT Martin, while Nico Zych, Byron Johann and Matt Haynes also went deep.
Against SIU Edwardsville, senior right-hander Dan Tobik (1-5, 5.77 ERA) will get the starting nod in Game 1, followed by sophomore southpaws Taylor Cox (0-4, 5.86) and Dalton Potts (4-5, 6.65) in Games 2 and 3, respectively. Tobik ranks second in the OVC in strikeouts per nine innings (9.89), while Cox (8.16) ranks ninth in that same category. Potts leads the Skyhawks with four victories and has conceded three or fewer earned runs in seven of his 11 appearances.
SIU Edwardsville (10-29, 7-17 OVC) saw a seven-game losing streak snap in the series finale at Morehead State last weekend. The Cougars have fallen on some bad luck, as 14 of their losses have come by two runs or less.
Joel Greatting paces the SIU Edwardsville offense in batting average (.304), runs scored (27), hits (42), home runs (five) and on-base percentage (.442). Skyler Geissinger (team-highs of 10 doubles, 25 RBI’s) and Devin Caldwell (team-best nine homers) also loom as power threats in the Cougar lineup.
Freshman righty Caleb Wilkerson (0-4, 7.02) is listed as SIU Edwardsville’s probable starting pitcher in Game 1. He is expected to be followed by freshman right-hander Sam Hopkins (1-4, 7.30) on Saturday and senior lefty Tony Schaeffer (1-4, 4.41) on Sunday.
