TENNIS TEAM FALLS 7-0 AT SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team ran into a hot Southern Illinois squad on Thursday afternoon, falling 7-0 at the Sportsblast Complex.

The Skyhawks (2-9) competed hard throughout the doubles competition but couldn’t secure the early point against Southern Illinois, who improved to 10-1 on the season. Ivon Simic and Anna Marie Herbold fell 8-2 at No. 1, while Katie McCall and Johanie Van Zyl fell 8-1 at No. 2. Anna Winkelmann and Jessica Silva fought at No. 3 before dropping an 8-2 decision.

In singles play, McCall fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6, while Silva lost at No. 5 by a 6-2, 6-3 margin. Van Zyl (6-2, 6-0) and Winkelmann (6-4, 6-1) came up just short at No. 4 and No. 3, respectively, while Herbold and Simic nearly pulled off victories. Herbold fell 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 while Simic was outlasted 7-6 (5), 6-3 at No. 1.

UT Martin resumes play next weekend, where it will look to stay undefeated in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Skyhawks travel to Murray State on Friday, March 29 (2 p.m.) and Austin Peay on Saturday, March 30 (1 p.m.).
