GOLF TEAM TO RIDE MOMENTUM INTO SAMFORD INTERCOLLEGIATE
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team will try to ride the momentum of its recent victory at the Frito Lay/Taco Bell Intercollegiate into the 2013 Samford Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday at Hoover (Alabama) Country Club.
Hoover Country Club is playing at 7,001 yards and is a Par 72. Golfers will play the first two rounds Monday, March 4, and the final round Tuesday, March 5.
“This tournament is always at a good top quality golf course,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “Another reason we like this tournament is because they always bring in some of the top competition around.”
The year’s field consists of 18 teams including Auburn, Belmont, Bowling Green, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Francis Marion, Furman, Georgia Southern, Montevallo, Murray State, Presbyterian, Samford, Southern Illinois, Tennessee Tech, Western Carolina, Winthrop and Vanderbilt.
“This is a good tournament, and the people at Hoover Country Club always make us feel welcome,” Carpenter said.
Samford shot a three-round 882 to win last year’s tournament, while Samford’s Casey O’Toole was the individual medalist with a three-round 211. The Skyhawks made the trip South a year ago, but Carpenter said his team didn’t play well.
He plans to bring freshmen Tyler Guy and Ben Reeves, junior Tyler Shellnut, senior Graham Sleigh and sophomore Brendon Caballero this year, the same five golfers that won the Frito Lay/Taco Bell Intercollegiate.
“We are playing well right now,” Carpenter said. It’s not because Carpenter’s golfers are getting to play every day. However, they are getting to practice and strike golf balls every day.
“We have a lot of confidence,” Carpenter said.
