JUNIOR TYLER SHELLNUT FIRES 6-UNDER IN THE THIRD ROUND TO WIN SKYHAWK CLASSIC

MARTIN, Tenn. – UT Martin junior Tyler Shellnut, from Franklin, fired a blistering 6-under-par in the third round to win individual medalist honors Tuesday afternoon at the Skyhawk Classic Golf Tournament at Paris Landing in Buchanan.
Shellnut shot 2-under in the first round and then 2-over in the second round. He finished the three-round tournament with 210 to beat Murray State’s Patrick Newcomb, Southern Illinois’ Brandon Cauldwell and John A. Logan’s Tucker Guisewite by a stroke.
“I am proud of proud of Tyler,” UT Martin golf coach Jerry Carpenter said. “He had a very good third round.”
Graham Sleigh and Clay Harbin, both playing on the UT Martin B team, finished seventh and eighth in the tournament, which included 78 players and 14 teams. Sleigh and Harbin each finished with three-round 213s. Sleigh shot a 4-under-par 68 in the second round and a 1-over in the third round. Harbin was consistent in all three rounds. He shot 1-under-par in each round.
The UT Martin B team shot a three-round 872 and finished tied for fifth. Freshman Tyler Guy from Clarksville and redshirt freshman Austin Smith from Westview rounded out the four-person team. Guy shot a three-round 218, while Smith shot a three-round 228.
Shellnut led the UT Martin A team which finished eighth in the 14-team tournament.
“We did not play well in the first and second round,” Carpenter said. “The problem, with both teams, was putting. We had 25 three-putts the first day. That’s an awesome stat in the wrong direction.”
Sophomore Brendon Caballero shot a three-round 222, while freshman Ben Reeves shot a three-round 223. Senior Taylor Deming had a three-round 225, while junior John Michael Sisinni carded a three-round 228.
Murray State and John A. Logan each finished the tournament at 3-under-par, with Murray State claiming the Skyhawk Classic title on the first playoff hole. All five members of each team played the 369-yard, par 4 No. 1 hole, with Murray State finishing 1-under-par and John A. Logan finishing the hole at 1-over-par.
The 2012 Skyhawk Classic was a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted UT Martin. The par 72 Paris Landing Golf Course was playing at a length of 6,685 yards.
