UTM LOOKS TO EXTEND REGULAR SEASON WIN STREAK OVER APSU ON CBS SPORTS NETWORK
MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin men’s basketball squad begins the 2018 calendar year with an Ohio Valley Conference road showdown against in-state rival Austin Peay in a nationally televised contest on Thursday, Jan. 4. Tipoff on CBS Sports Network from the Dunn Center is set for 6 p.m.
The Skyhawks have not lost a regular season matchup against Austin Peay since the 2013-14 season finale, unreeling six consecutive victories since then. Despite UT Martin’s undefeated record in that span, each of the last five regular season games have been decided by single digits. The Skyhawks’ lone setback to the Governors in the last three-plus seasons occurred in the 2016 OVC Tournament championship, a game where No. 8 seed Austin Peay posted an 83-73 upset win over No. 2 seed UT Martin.
Last week, the Skyhawks (6-9, 1-1 OVC) earned a home split to kick off OVC play, defeating Tennessee State by a 63-60 margin in overtime before falling 65-58 to two-time defending regular season champion Belmont.
Junior forward Jailen Gill emerged as UT Martin’s leading scorer in both contests, as he has pumped in 17.0 points per game on 87.5 percent shooting (14-of-16) in conference play. Darius Thompson has averaged 11.0 points and team-highs of 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game in league play while Matthew Butler (10.5 points per game), Fatodd Lewis (10.0 points, 6.5 rebounds per game) and Mike Fofana (team-high 7.0 rebounds per game) round out the Skyhawks’ starting five.
Austin Peay (7-7) was one of five teams to begin the OVC slate with an unblemished 2-0 record, turning away SIUE (78-58) and Eastern Illinois (70-54) at home.
The frontcourt tandem of Averyl Ugba (19.0 points, 10.5 rebounds) and Terry Taylor (15.5 points, 11.0 rebounds) each averaged a double-double last week for the Governors, who lead the OVC in steals (8.6 per game), turnover margin (+2.79), offensive rebounding (13.8 per game) and offensive rebounding percentage (.378).
