UTM Game Notes
The University of Tennessee at Martin football team will hit the road to close out the 2017 season with a matchup at Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Nov. 18. Kickoff from Tucker Field is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
The Skyhawks (5-5, 3-4 OVC) will look to notch the program’s eighth winning season under head coach Jason Simpson during his 12-year tenure. Additionally, a victory would also continue a stretch of 12 consecutive seasons in which the Skyhawks have finished at least .500 or better in league play.
UT Martin enters the contest coming off a narrow loss to No. 2 ranked Jacksonville State its last time out 14-7. The Gamecocks and Skyhawks would battle in a defensive affair as it pitted the nation’s fourth and eighth ranked defenses, respectively, against each other. UT Martin’s defense would limit Jacksonville State - a team which entered the game averaging 32.1 points per game – to just 14 points while a late blocked field goal by Mike Turner set a potential game-tying scoring drive before ultimately came up just short.
Overall, the Skyhawks rank first in the OVC scoring defense at 15.7 points per game, opponent third down conversion (28.7 percent) and opponent fourth down conversion (33.3 percent) while sitting second in pass defense (163.0 ypg), third in total defense (282.8 ypg) and fourth in rushing defense (119.8 ypg).
The coaching matchup pits old friends against each other in UT Martin’s Jason Simpson and Tennessee Tech’s Marcus Satterfield. Simpson recently moved into sixth place on both the OVC’s all-time and conference-only leaderboard with an overall record of 77-59 in 12 seasons. Satterfield – who previously served as UT Martin’s offensive coordinator from 2006-08 owns a career mark of 6-14 in his second year at the helm of the Golden Eagles.
Tennessee Tech (1-9, 1-6 OVC) heads into the final week of the season hoping to snap a two-game losing patch with losses to Austin Peay and Murray State recently. The Golden Eagles currently rank last in the OVC in scoring offense (17.4 ppg), scoring defense (30.1 ppg) and total defense (417.5 ypg).
Saturday’s matchup marks the 39th meeting between the two programs dating back to 1926 with Tennessee Tech holding a 22-14-2 series advantage. UT Martin will look to continue a currently winning streak in recent history however, winning four consecutive matchups dating back to the 2013 season.
The game will be broadcast the OVC Digital Network. Fans can also tune into Mix 101.3 FM to hear Tom Britt (play-by-play), Chris Brinkley (color) and John Abel (sideline) provide analysis.
