EVANSVILLE, Ind. – As part of today’s Ohio Valley Conference Basketball Media Day festivities, University of Tennessee at Martin redshirt senior Matthew Butler was recognized as a Preseason All-OVC honoree for the 2017-18 season.
A 6-2, 185-pound guard, Butler garnered All-OVC Newcomer status in his debut campaign last season for the Skyhawks. As the only UT Martin player to start in all 35 games, Butler ranked third in the OVC in minutes played (35.8 per game), eighth in three-point field goals made (2.3 per game) and 10th in assists (3.7 per game) while tossing in 13.7 points and nabbing 2.9 rebounds per contest.
Butler connected on 82 three-pointers last season, the second-most of any returner in the league (behind only Preseason OVC Player of the Year Jonathan Stark from Murray State). He scored at least nine points in all but two games, including 28 double-digit outings in 2016-17. The dynamic guard posted a pair of 30-plus point performances while sinking at least four treys on eight different occasions during his junior campaign.
The Memphis, Tenn. native often saved his best performances for the biggest stage, as Butler earned a spot on the OVC All-Tournament team after posting 17.0 points per game while playing all 80 minutes against Murray State and Jacksonville State.
Butler also proved he was not just a scorer last season, as he dished out at least five assists in nine different contests. He also was responsible for four multi-steal performances while leading the nation for the majority of the season in minutes played.
In addition, the OVC preseason polls were announced this morning in conjunction with Media Day. UT Martin was picked eighth by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors with 114 overall points.
The Skyhawks officially start the 2017-18 campaign under head coach Anthony Stewart on Friday, Nov. 10 when they travel to Huntington, W.Va. to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd out of Conference USA.
