COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer squad saw its two-game winning streak snapped as it could not outlast the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, falling 1-0 this afternoon in the regular season finale.
UT Martin (6-10-3, 4-5-1 OVC) was nearly able to match Tennessee Tech shot-for-shot as both teams tallied 10 total shots in the defensive battle. Amy McGivern (four shots, two on goal) led the way for the Skyhawks while Danae Kaldaridou (three shots, one on goal), Alice Adams (two shots) and Katelyn Colvin (one shot) all contributed in the bout.
Goalkeeper Erica Myers conceded the Golden Eagles only goal of the match in the sixth minute of the match as Kendall Powell found the back of the net. Myers was able to compile three saves in all 90 minutes between the posts.
McGivern brought pressure early, accounting for all three of UT Martin’s shots in the opening half. Her attempts were on the mark in both the 14th and 30th minutes but a pair of saves were credited to the Golden Eagles.
The Skyhawks outshot Tennessee Tech in the second half by a 7-6 margin. Colvin, McGivern, Adams and Kaldaridou all reeled off shots in the first six minutes of the second period but to no avail. Kaldaridou tried again at the 74:14 mark but the attempt was wide left. Adams then gave a heave that missed high in the 80th minute.
Kaldaridou attempted a header that went over the goal at the 82:48 mark for the final UT Martin shot of the match.
Despite the setback, the Skyhawks notched the No. 6 seed in the Ohio Valley Conference Championships and will play the SIUE Cougars in Richmond, Ky. on Friday, Oct. 27. UT Martin will go for the season sweep of the Cougars, as the Skyhawks claimed a 3-2 double overtime victory at home just nine days ago.
