BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the fourth time this season, a University of Tennessee at Martin soccer player has garnered a top Ohio Valley Conference weekly honor as the league announced today that Kaci Mitchell is the adidas OVC Defensive Player of the Week.
Mitchell becomes the first Skyhawk to win the league’s weekly defensive award this season, joining teammates Danae Kaldaridou (Offensive on Aug. 22), Amy McGivern (Offensive on Sept. 5) and Erica Myers (Goalkeeper on Sept. 19) as UT Martin representatives on the OVC’s Player of the Week list in 2017. Overall, Mitchell is just the 12th different Skyhawk to ever win OVC Defensive Player of the Week and the first since Nov. 3, 2015.
A 5-7 native of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Mitchell pushed up from her defender spot to secure a pair of goals this past weekend. The redshirt junior logged a total of 176 minutes as the Skyhawks posted a narrow 3-2 home setback against Belmont on Friday before playing to an even 2-2 draw at Austin Peay on Sunday.
In Friday’s match against Belmont, Mitchell found the back of the net on a header in the 31st minute, taking a feed from Katelyn Colvin for her only shot attempt of the match. Two days later at Austin Peay, Mitchell’s lone shot attempt was once again true as this time she scooted a shot off the hands of the Governors’ goalkeeper and into the goal in the 33rd minute.
Mitchell, who came into the weekend having not attempted a shot since Sept. 1 against Chattanooga, leads the Skyhawks with a .333 shot percentage. Her three goals rank second on the team as she has started in each of her 11 matches played.
UT Martin returns home for a pair of big matchups this weekend, hosting SIUE (Oct. 13) and Eastern Illinois (Oct. 15) during the final homestand of the season.
