BUCHANAN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team sprung out to an early lead and continued its momentum with an under-par round this afternoon to top the 12-team field at the Skyhawk Fall Classic.
One year after winning the tournament for the first time ever, the Skyhawks’ two-round score of 577 (+1) is two shots better than second-place Murray State. UT Martin shot a 290 (+2) this morning before carding the only under-par round of any team (287, -1) in the second round.
Individually, five Skyhawks make up the top 11 spots on the leaderboard as UT Martin accumulated five below-par rounds on the challenging Paris Landing State Park golf course.
“I thought our effort was good because the guys were able to adapt to tough conditions around the green,” Skyhawk graduate assistant Austin Swafford said. “I think it was evident that the guys felt comfortable playing our home course but also when things didn’t go their way, they were able to adjust and bounce back. All of our players – including the ones playing as individuals – are looking forward to contributing and helping defend our title tomorrow.”
The UT Martin lineup boasts four players in the top-11 and all five players in the top-20. Ross Redmont posted back-to-back 71’s today for a 142 (-2) which ranks fourth in the field of 76 golfers. Hunter Richardson is tied for fifth place after shooting an even-par 144 (74-70) today while Jack Story (74-72, 146) and Nick Wolf (71-75, 146) are tied for 11th place with a score of +2 on the day. Ryan Davis also pitched in with a 74 in each round today for a 148 (+4).
Davis leads the field in par-3 scoring (2.75, -2) while Richardson (4.38, -5) ranks atop the field in par-5 scoring. Both Story (Hole No. 16, first round) and Richardson (Hole No. 12 second round) dialed up eagles on par-5 holes today.
The Skyhawks also boast the top three golfers competing as individuals, paced by Cameron Smith. The junior from Brentwood, Tenn. began his day with a 73 before catching fire for a 68 this afternoon, which was tied for the lowest round of any competitor on the day. He led UT Martin with 10 birdies today as his 141 (-3) ranks third overall and is only three shots off the individual leader Brian Whitson (128, -6) of John A. Logan College.
Tate Chumley (76-73; 149) and Zach Haynes (78-72) each played within one shot of each other while Mason Chandler and Peyton Dix tallied scores of 161 and 163, respectively.
The third and final round is set for 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Paris Landing State Park.
