MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time in program history, University of Tennessee at Martin athlete Edwin Kurgat garnered national honors after being named the Division I Men’s Cross Country HERO of the Week by HERO Sports.
A native of Eldoret, Kenya, Kurgat dominated the 140-runner, 8k field at the Stegemoller Classic by winning individual honors for the second consecutive meet. Outmatching his opponents by nearly 26 full seconds, Kurgat shattered the program’s previous school record with a time of 23:59.1. His blazing time surpassed his previous benchmark set last season by 51 seconds and ranked as the third fastest time in the OVC this season.
Along with his national honor, Kurgat earned his second adidas OVC Male Runner of the Week honor of the season earlier in the week. He currently ranks as the program’s 8k cross country and 5k outdoor track school record holder while pacing the Skyhawk men as the team’s top finisher in all eight of his career performances.
Kurgat and the Skyhawks will look to continue their hot start to the season with an appearance at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Sept. 30.
