MARTIN, Tenn. – For the second time this season, University of Tennessee at Martin athlete Edwin Kurgat garnered adidas Ohio Valley Conference Co-Male Runner of the Week honors after a strong medalist performance at the Stegemoller Classic this past weekend.
A native of Eldoret, Kenya, Kurgat dominated the 140-runner, 8k field at the Stegemoller Classic by winning individual honors for the second consecutive meet. Outmatching his opponents by nearly 26 full seconds, Kurgat shattered the program’s previous school record with a time of 23:59.1. His blazing time surpassed his previous benchmark set last season by 51 seconds and ranked as the third fastest time in the OVC this season.
This is the second Male Runner of the Week honors for the reigning OVC Outdoor Track and Field 5k champion. Ranking as the program’s 8k cross country and 5k outdoor track school record holder, Kurgat has paced the Skyhawk men as the team’s top finisher in all eight of his career performances.
Kurgat and the Skyhawks will look to continue their hot start to the season with an appearance at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Sept. 30.
