BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For only the ninth time in program history, the University of Tennessee at Martin has produced a pair of adidas Ohio Valley Conference Players of the Week on the same date as Brooke Gyori (Defensive) and Megan Fair (Newcomer) earned the recognition today.
Gyori becomes just the fifth different player in Skyhawk history to win OVC Defensive Player of the Week accolades while Fair is only the third different player in school history to bring home OVC Newcomer of the Week honors. Today’s announcement marks the first time that UT Martin has boasted two OVC Players of the Week on the same date since Nov. 2, 2015.
The pair helped UT Martin go 2-1 at the Memphis Invitational last weekend, marking the Skyhawks’ second consecutive runner-up tournament appearance.
A 5-4 junior libero, Gyori accumulated 65 digs (5.42 per set) in the three matches last week. She began with 21 digs in only three sets in Friday’s 3-0 sweep over Nicholls. Later that evening, she scooped up 28 digs (one shy of her career-high) during the Skyhawks’ dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Louisiana Monroe. She followed that with 16 more digs in four sets at Memphis, giving her 12 consecutive matches with double-digit digs.
Gyori currently ranks second in the OVC with 4.57 digs per set. The Oregon, Ohio native has eclipsed the 20-dig mark on four different occasions in 2017, including a career-best 29 digs against Louisiana Tech on Aug. 31.
Fair earned all-tournament honors at the Memphis Invitational, producing a stat line of 33 kills (2.75 per set) on a .211 attack percentage, six service aces and 23 digs (1.92 per set). The 6-0 junior also made a bit of UT Martin history in the process, dialing up 16 kills with no errors in 33 swings for a .485 attack percentage in the win over Louisiana Monroe. That marked the most kills without an error in a single match in school history. In addition, she had 10 kills against Nicholls and seven kills against Memphis while securing at least seven digs in all three matches over the weekend.
An outside hitter who hails from Conover, NC, Fair ranks just outside the top-10 in the OVC with her team-best 2.83 kills per set. She has generated double-figure kills in seven different matches this season, including a career-high 21 kills in only four sets against Little Rock on Sept. 1.
UT Martin opens Ohio Valley Conference play tomorrow when it plays host to Southeast Missouri. First serve from Skyhawk Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m.
