MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin cross country program saw both its men’s and women’s programs make history on Monday afternoon after each squad garnered a regional ranking by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
With the nation’s Division I cross country programs split into nine geographical regions, UT Martin competes in the South Region which includes the state of Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.
UT Martin’s men’s squad notched the program’s first regional ranking after debuting at No. 14 following an upset of regionally ranked East Tennessee State its last time out. Meanwhile, the Skyhawk women’s squad remained ranked as well, sitting No. 15.
“For both teams to be recognized regionally is a great moment for our program,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “To see the how hard our kids have worked and to be rewarded in this manner is exciting. We are pleased with where we are currently ranked and there is a lot of work left to be done, but we aren’t satisfied with just being in the conversation, we are making steps to become a top-10 regional program year in and year out.”
UT Martin will take its regional rankings on the road this weekend with an appearance at the Stegemoller Classic in Evansville, Ind. on Saturday, Sept. 16.
