MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time this season, University of Tennessee at Martin athlete Edwin Kurgat garnered adidas Ohio Valley Conference Co-Male Runner of the Week honors after a strong medalist performance at the Covered Bridge Open this past weekend.
A native of Eldoret, Kenya, Kurgat outmatched a field which included a pair of regional ranked foes and a Division II power to notch the top finish at the Covered Bridge Open with an 8k time of 25:52.1. With his strong showing, he lifted his unranked team to a third place finish in the open behind Florida State and Southern Indiana while defeating regionally ranked foe East Tennessee State.
This is the first Male Runner of the Week honor for the reigning OVC Outdoor Track and Field 5k champion. Ranking as the program’s 8k cross country and 5k outdoor track school record holder, Kurgat has paced the Skyhawk men as the team’s top finisher in all seven of his career performances.
Kurgat and the Skyhawks will look to continue their strong start to the season with an appearance at the Stegemoller Classic on Saturday, Sept. 16, hosted by Southern Indiana.
