MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team hosts sister school Chattanooga this Friday, Sept. 1 with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
The Skyhawks (1-3) look to break their three-match losing streak as the Mocs (1-2-1) are in a two-match skid of their own. Last season, UT Martin beat Chattanooga 3-2 in an aggressive showdown on the road. Amy McGivern (goal) and Maggie Burkett (assist) each played a vital role in the Skyhawk victory.
UT Martin saw impressive flashes from freshman midfielder Vanessa Dwumfour-Poku and freshman goalkeeper Erica Myers over the weekend. Dwumfour-Poku notched her first collegiate goal as she netted the Skyhawks’ only goal of the weekend against UAB. Myers compiled a total of 16 saves in the two-match span, which included a heartbreaking 1-0 road loss to Western Kentucky in overtime.
On the season, Katelyn Colvin leads the Ohio Valley Conference and ranks 14th nationally with three assists. She is tied with teammate Danae Kaldaridou for fourth in the conference in points (five) while McGivern’s 12 shots rank fifth in the league.
Chattanooga claimed a 3-2 victory against Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay and played OVC opponent Eastern Kentucky to a scoreless tie in the opening weekend. However, the Mocs suffered setbacks against Radford (2-0) and Elon (4-1) last week.
Chattanooga’s leading scorer is Jordan Mueller, who has two shots and an assist while taking only eight shots on the season. Chloe Arnold has attempted a team-high 12 shots on the season for the Mocs.
Last season, head coach Gavin McKinney directed Chattanooga to a fifth-place finish in the Southern Conference, which was the best for the Mocs’ soccer program since 2004.
