MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team continues its nonconference schedule this Friday, Aug. 25when it hosts UAB at Skyhawk Field. Kickoff set for 7 p.m.
UT Martin (1-1) is coming off an opening weekend split where the Skyhawks picked up an impressive 4-1 victory over Marshall and lost 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion to Evansville. This is only the second time that UT Martin has played the Blazers, the first matchup ended in a 4-1 loss last season in Birmingham.
Over the weekend, the Skyhawks were led by Danae Kaldaridou (five points, two goals and one assist), who was named adidas OVC Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Katelyn Colvin (two assists and one goal), Nicole Collins and Kaci Mitchell (one goal each) also had a good weekend for the Skyhawks who outshot their opponents 33-14 over the weekend. UT Martin placed more shots on goal (16) than total shots allowed over the first two matches of the season.
Defensively, UT Martin was led by Maggie Burkett, who along with freshman Kamryn Chappell played all 180 minutes in the squad’s first two matches of the 2017 campaign.
Freshman goalkeeper Erica Myers proved her worth by compiling two complete matches between the posts with a respectable 1.50 goals against average while picking up three saves along the way.
UAB is 2-0 on the young season, coming off a stretch in which it put together two shutouts by beating Georgia State (1-0) and winning on the road at Jackson State (5-0).
The Blazers are led by freshman Betsy Ornelas (five points, two goals and one assist) and junior goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty (eight saves, two shutouts). Ornelas paced a UAB offense that outshot its opponents by a 46-17 margin while Daugherty was named Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday.
UAB first-year head coach Erica Demers has already turned a corner with the Blazers, who went 4-11-2 last season.
