MARTIN, Tenn. –The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team is set to open the 2017 season under the lights of Skyhawk Field against Marshall University this Friday, Aug. 18. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
This is the first meeting between the two schools and third straight season in which UT Martin has opened with a Conference USA opponent. The Skyhawks played two C-USA programs last season (Western Kentucky and UAB) and will continue that tradition this year.
The 2017 campaign marks the 20th season of Skyhawk Soccer as head coach Phil McNamara and his staff have concluded offseason preparation which began on Aug. 3. With McNamara in charge, UT Martin has claimed four OVC championships and looks to reestablish a solid foothold in the conference with this year’s young squad.
Juniors Amy McGivern, Danae Kaldaridou and Maggie Burkett are projected to lead the Skyhawks during the upcoming campaign. All three midfielders have earned All-OVC honors in their UT Martin careers.
The Skyhawks will field the third-largest freshman class in the nation as 12 newcomers are set to suit up for their collegiate debuts. As a result, McNamara boasts a loaded 23-player roster that six juniors, five sophomores and zero seniors.
Marshall has been picked to finish ninth in Conference USA after narrowly missing out on a postseason berth last year. Not to be overlooked, the Thundering Herd returns C-USA All-Freshman and All-Conference third team honoree Jordan Sackaris after she finished tied for first in points (16) and led Marshall in goals (7) in 2016.
The trio of Ashley Seltzer, Jayne Lawman and Metztli Gonzalez – all three of whom started in every match along with Sackaris – return for head coach Kevin Long, who is in his 10th season coaching the Thundering Herd.
