BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference announced this morning that University of Tennessee at Martin senior Jemima Idemudia has earned a spot on the 2017 Preseason All-OVC team.
Idemudia is one of 14 players on the Preseason All-OVC team, which was voted on by the league head coaches and sports information directors. The award comes after the 6-2 middle blocker became only the fifth different Skyhawk to capture All-OVC first team honors in 2016.
A Glendale, Ariz. native, Idemudia blossomed into one of the best players in the OVC last season after transferring in from Scottsdale Community College. She ranked fourth in the OVC in blocks (126, 1.15 per set) while also ranking in the league’s top-10 in points (3.65 per set, eighth) and kills (2.93 per set, 10th) in conference play.
Idemudia paced UT Martin with 310 kills (2.82 per set) on a .243 attack percentage in 2016. She recorded double-digit kills in 14 different matches, including a trio of 20-plus kill performances (22 at Eastern Illinois on Nov. 4, 21 against Tennessee State on Oct. 14, 20 against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 16).
In 2016, Idemudia also accumulated five or more blocks 14 times, including a career-best seven swats in four different contests. She earned all-tournament honors at the A-State Invitational (Sept. 9-10) and the Fight Like Hal Memorial Invitational (Sept. 16-17) and was also named adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week twice (Oct. 17, Nov. 7).
Idemudia is one of seven players and three starters returning for head coach Jaclynn Yocum-Wilson in 2017. The Skyhawks begin their season with three matches at the WVU Invitational in Morgantown, W. Va. on Aug. 25-26.
