MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin football team concluded its eighth practice of the camp season on Thursday evening.
Completing the first full week of fall camp, UT Martin continues to work on playbook install on both offense and defense as it moves closer to the season opener three weeks away on Thursday, Aug. 31. Focusing on offense vs. defense drills and matchups, the Skyhawks continues to show their strength and physicality on a humid evening.
“A lot of plays were made today on both sides of the ball,” said UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson. “Like I told the guys, it’s nice to see big plays on both sides whether it be turnovers or touchdown passes. The thing we need to improve on before Saturday’s first scrimmage is working on consistency. If you give up the big play on defense and play great for 20 other plays, you are held accountable for the big play you gave up and vice versa on offense. I’m impressed so far with the physicality of this team, they will run and hit, now we just have to work to become more consistent.”
While UT Martin prides itself on being tough in the trenches and at the skill positions, it’s the offense which made significant strides through strong play on Thursday evening.
“Well there is a lot of offense in so far through install,” said Simpson. “We are tremendously ahead of where we have been in years past with a fifth-year senior quarterback along with an offensive line and group of wide receivers which were here together all summer. It’s still not a finished product, but I’m very happy with where we are to this point.”
Armed with a veteran quarterback and several returning starters on offense, the Skyhawks hope to continue to rank as an offensive juggernaut within the Ohio Valley Conference.
“The offense is moving along pretty well,” said senior wide receiver Caylon Weathers. “I like the way we are moving the ball and all of the different people that are contributing within the offense. So far everything we have worked on is coming along pretty well and I like the strides our team is making. We just try to come out every day and attack the day. When we talk to the young players, we tell them that camp isn’t easy, but you have to come out and have the right mindset.”
UT Martin will return to the gridiron with Practice #9 on Friday, Aug. 11 at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks will then conduct their first scrimmage of camp on Saturday, Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Practices are free and open to the public.
