MARTIN, Tenn. – On the fourth consecutive days of practice, the University of Tennessee at Martin football team had its first look at full contact drills after pairing their helmets with pads on Monday evening.
The Skyhawks continue to progress through the camp schedule with Practice #5 on Monday evening. With the program benefitting from ideal weather conditions on yet another unseasonably cool night, UT Martin continued the playbook install while adding a touch of physicality to the mix for the first time during camp.
“There wasn’t that much contact of taking guys to the ground until that last period,” said UT Martin head coach Jason Simpson. “Two good things happened today though. There was some contact today and we made it off the field in one piece. We are still installing, working on fundamentals and installing special teams. I’m excited about some of the young kids so far though that keep showing up on tape. I look to see us continue to grow and became a mature and selfless team. Today was a good day and I think we got better.”
When asking Preseason All-OVC selection Tae Martin about adding physicality to practice, he shared his excitement. “Being on the defense, it always gets the juices going when you can put on the pads,” said Martin. “There is a lot of excitement and we came out with a lot of intensity with it being the first day. There are still some things to clean up but we look forward to watching film and seeing what we can improve on. We really have to take coaching and learn how to apply it on the field.”
UT Martin will return to the gridiron with three more practices before the team’s off day on Friday, Aug. 11. All practices this week begin at 7:15 p.m. and are open to the public. The Skyhawks will hold their first scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 12 at 7:15 p.m.
