MARTIN, Tenn. – Third-year University of Tennessee at Martin head volleyball coach Jaclynn Yocum has announced the 28-match fall schedule, which includes four nonconference tournaments and 16 Ohio Valley Conference matchups.
The Skyhawks will take on eight teams who tallied winning records last fall and will square off against programs from nine different conferences in 2017.
“This is the most challenging schedule we have had in my tenure at UT Martin,” Yocum said. “We will be tested early and often throughout the nonconference season, which we hope will adequately prepare us for another tough OVC slate.”
Right off the bat, the Skyhawks will face stiff competition in the WVU Invitational held in Morgantown, W. Va. on Aug. 25-26. UT Martin opens its season with a showdown against Penn State, whose seven national championships are tied for the most in NCAA Division I women’s volleyball history. The Skyhawks follow with a matchup against West Virginia and a Delaware team who advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship match in 2016.
UT Martin then travels to Conway, Ark. for the UCA Invitational on Sept. 1-2. The Skyhawks open the tournament against in-state rival Memphis and Little Rock before taking on tournament host Central Arkansas.
A short trek to Evansville, Ind. follows as UT Martin will face UAB, Indiana and Evansville as part of the Dunn Hospitality Invitational on Sept. 8-9.
The nonconference season will be wrapped up on Sept. 15-16 at the Memphis Invitational. The Skyhawks will battle Nicholls and Louisiana-Monroe on the first day of the event before matching up against Memphis for the second time in the 2017 campaign.
OVC play begins with a four-match homestand on Sept. 19-30, as UT Martin’s home opener takes place with a midweek match against Southeast Missouri on Sept. 19. The Skyhawks will also host Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22), Murray State (Sept. 29) and Austin Peay (Sept. 30) to start their conference season.
Four OVC road dates open the month of October, as UT Martin travels to SIUE, Eastern Illinois, Belmont and Tennessee State in successive weekends.
The Skyhawks return home on Oct. 20-21 to host Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State before another four-match OVC road swing follows. UT Martin travels to Southeast Missouri, Jacksonville State, Austin Peay and Murray State before closing out the regular season at Skyhawk Fieldhouse against Eastern Illinois (Nov. 10) and SIUE (Nov. 11).
UT Martin will look to qualify for its 13th appearance in the OVC Championships, as this year’s tournament will take place on Nov. 16-20 and will be hosted by the league’s regular season champion.
