MARTIN, Tenn. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association recently released its final 2016-17 Oracle Collegiate Tennis Division I Rankings for each region and three University of Tennessee at Martin honorees found themselves on the prestigious list.
The ITA recognized Skyhawk senior Sarah Candeloro at No. 18 on the regions’ top-20 singles listing while slotting the UT Martin duo of senior Burcu Tari and sophomore Andrea Plantada as the 10th best doubles team in the region.
The Ohio Valley Regional is made up of 27 universities, including Austin Peay, Ball State, Belmont, Butler, Chattanooga, Cincinnati, Dayton, East Tennessee State, Eastern Kentucky, Evansville, Indiana, IUPUI, Kentucky, Lipscomb, Louisville, Memphis, Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee State, Murray State, Northern Kentucky, Purdue, Tennessee, UT Martin, Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky, Wright State and Xavier.
Candeloro, who just last week was honored as one of only seven Division I Academic All-Americans, put the finishing touches on a remarkable career this past spring. Competing at No. 1 singles all year long, the Dover, Del. native posted a 25-5 record, going 13-2 in the fall and 12-3 in the spring. She posted a 7-2 mark against Ohio Valley Conference rivals and had a 13-match winning streak from Sept. 9 through Oct. 22.
Tari and Plantada initially joined forces on March 4 and quickly formed a successful team, going 11-1 with a perfect 7-0 OVC mark (all at No. 3) through the end of the season. Hailing from Istanbul, Turkey, Tari wrapped up her record-setting four-year career by winning her final eight doubles decisions alongside Plantada, a Puzol, Spain native.
Overall, the UT Martin trio helped the Skyhawks post a 12-5 record with an 8-1 OVC mark. UT Martin emerged victorious in 11 consecutive matches from March 4 through April 7 (the second longest winning streak in school history) and finished second in the OVC regular season standings under head coach Dennis Taylor in 2016-17.
