LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Tennessee at Martin senior standout Ann Asipan kept her Skyhawk career alive with a top-12 finish to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships following a strong showing at the NCAATF East Preliminary Championships on Saturday evening.
Asipan continued to build upon her stellar UT Martin career by posting a 5k time of 16:17.72 to finish seventh overall in the NCAATF Est Preliminary Championship hosted by Kentucky. In a crowded field of 24 competitors, Asipan clinched a spot in the exclusive championship field by clinching a top-12 time. With her finish, Asipan is one of just two Ohio Valley Conference athletes to advance to the NCAA Championships in the event.
Qualifying for the NCAA National Championship is just one of many accomplishments for the senior standout. Asipan is a two-time reigning OVC Cross Country champion while holding numerous school records. On the track along, she currently holds school records in the 1,500m (4:26.3), mile (5:03.6), 3k (9:42.7) and 5k (16:08.4). She has been rewarded for her blazing times by earning three All-OVC first team honors along with a pair of All-Region cross country honors.
“Ann wasn’t ready for her season and college career to be over,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “Her composure in a high level, high pressure, championships event was so impressive. She certainly deserves this opportunity to compete with the nation’s best.”
Asipan will continue her training regimen until traveling to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Eugene, Oregon – the home of track and field. The women's 5k will be ran on Saturday, June 10 at 7:25 p.m. CST. The entire event will be broadcast on ESPN.
