OXFORD, Ala. – In a game that featured a three hour and 33 minute weather delay, the University of Tennessee at Martin fell 6-2 to Austin Peay in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championship to conclude its 2017 campaign.
Austin Peay (27-28) picked up four runs in the first inning on a grand slam by OVC All-Freshman Parker Phillips to jump out to an early 4-0 lead.
UT Martin (25-30) rallied back, putting runners on second and third with no one out in the top of the fifth inning before the rain and lightning settled in. After a lengthy delay, second baseman Tyler Albright ripped a shot into left-center field to bring home Connor Aube and Creighton Eldridge and trim the deficit to 4-2.
The Governors responded in the bottom half of the fifth on a two-run homer from Chase Hamilton to reclaim their four run lead, 6-2. The Skyhawks tagged some balls off of Austin Peay reliever Caleb Powell, including putting runners on first and second with no one out in the ninth, but just could not find a gap in the later innings as they dropped the elimination game of the OVC Tournament.
Dalton Westfall (5-6) suffered the loss, tossing 4.0 innings prior to the weather stoppage. Alex Evans finished the contest out of the bullpen tossing the final 4.0 innings, striking out three batters and surrendering two earned runs. Powell (4-4) picked up the victory for the Governors.
Albright finished the season with a 3-5 effort, including driving in both of the Skyhawk runs. Ben Aslett was the only other UT Martin batter to record a hit in the loss.
The Skyhawks end their season with a Division-I program high 25 wins, as well as the most OVC victories in a season with 12. The Skyhawk pitching staff notched a program best 413 strikeouts on the year, besting the previous high of 369.
