MARTIN, Tenn. – After a seamless transition to the track, two-time Ohio Valley Conference cross country champion Ann Asipan will compete against the nation’s best after earning the right to compete in the NCAA Track and Field East Preliminary Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 27 in Lexington, Ky.
Arguably heralded as the most decorated cross country and track athlete in Skyhawk history, Asipan will toe the line at the NCAA East Prelims in the women’s 5,000 meters. After recently being named UT Martin’s Bettye Giles Female Athlete of the Year, she posted a blistering school-record 5k time of 16:08.43 in the Gina Relays to solidify her place in the championships. Currently, Asipan’s time of 16:08.43 is ranked 20th out of 48 competitors at the NCAA East Regional Championships.
The NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Prelims are set-up in an East and West Region. The top-48 times from each region earn the right to compete at the NCAA regional preliminary round. Ultimately, 12 athletes from each region, in each event, qualify for the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Oregon - the home of track and field - on June 7-10.
“Ann has flourished during her time here and has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time,” said UT Martin head coach Peter Dalton. “During the first year Ann began her career in the 18:45 range. To see her now competing with the nation’s best, and nearly three minutes faster, is a testament to her determination and the programs ascension.”
ESPN will live stream the championships on Saturday, May 27th. Asipan competes at 8:05pm (EST) and can be viewed http://www.espn.com/watch/?id=3077691&_slug_=2017-ncaa-outdoor-track--field-championship.
