The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will open up play in its third postseason appearance in program history in the Postseason National Invitational Softball Championship Region 5 bracket hosted by Georgia State. The Skyhawks will being play in the double-elimination bracket which runs Tuesday, May 16 – Thursday, May 18.
The Skyhawks (39-18) will open tournament play against Georgia State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CST at Robert E. Heck Softball Complex. The field also includes Kennesaw State, Western Kentucky and Alabama State.
UT Martin is coming off a strong showing in the Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championship where the team made it to championship Saturday before falling in the consolation final. The Skyhawks did tally three wins in the field for the first time since 2013 behind strong showings on both sides of the ball.
Senior Carly Gonzales has continued to shine in her final season, posting a .380 batting average out of the leadoff spot while setting program records with 41 stolen bases and a 33-game on-base streak. Gonzales has also tallied 62 hits on the year while notching 12 doubles, three triples and a home run while driving in 20. Junior Jodie Duncan is also posting a career-year, tallying a .366 batting average with 10 doubles, nine home runs and 47 RBIs after bashing three home run and five RBIs in the OVC tournament.
The Skyhawks would ride the right arm of senior Brooke Kennedy throughout the OVC Softball Championship as she tossed of 580 pitches in 31.2 innings of work. Kennedy currently holds a 23-7 overall record along with a 2.72 ERA in 185.1 innings of work. She has also tossed 21 complete games and five shutouts while striking out 143.
Fans can follow along with the tournament through live stats. Parking is $10 per day while admission is $10 per day or $25 for the entire tournament. Children 12 and under are free while college students with a valid ID from one of the participating schools can receive tickets for just $5.
