MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will continue its 2017 season after earning the Ohio Valley Conference’s automatic berth into the Postseason National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) – the NIT of softball – should the Skyhawks not receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. This will mark the program’s third postseason appearance and first in the NISC.
Tournament officials will make final decisions on who makes the cut for the NISC after the 64-team NCAA Tournament field is announced on Sunday, May 14 on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. At approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday night, the location of each NISC regional and competing teams will be released.
Matchups and game times for Round 1 will be announced by 8 a.m. on Monday, May 15. Regionals begin on Tuesday, May 16 and will be completed Thursday, May 18.
Times and dates for the championship round will be determined after regionals.
Selections into the 48-team field are based on 32 automatic qualifiers – with one from each conference, the next 12 teams based on May 14ths final RPI rankings and the next four at-large teams as determined from the season’s body of work.
The NISC is produced by Triple Crown Sports, which also operated the Preseason and Postseason WNIT basketball tournaments, the men’s and women’s Cancun Challenge basketball events in Mexico, the NCAA Division-1 softball event in Mexico called the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge along with the new 64-team National Invitational Volleyball Championship.
