Series Notes Watch: OVCDN Saturday Live Stats: Friday Saturday Sunday
MARTIN, Tenn. – In the final home series of the season, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will host Ohio Valley Conference rival Jacksonville State beginning on Friday, May 12 at 6 p.m. The two programs will meet again at Skyhawk Field on Saturday, May 13 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, May 14 at 1 p.m.
Six seniors will be playing their final home series in a Skyhawk uniform. Alex Evans, Jake Patzner, Ryan Helgren, Josh Hauser, Dan Kerwin and Tanner Wessling will each be honored for their career contributions in a Senior Day pregame ceremony on Saturday.
UT Martin (23-25, 10-14 OVC) is on the verge of a couple of program milestones heading into this all-important series with the Gamecocks. The Skyhawks need just one more win to tie the all-time mark for victories in a season since joining Division-I (24, 2010), while they will also be looking to set the program mark for OVC wins, having already tied the previous best (10, 2011).
Statistically, the Skyhawk offense is on a tear as six different players have now eclipsed the .300 mark (Wessling .357, Ben Aslett .324, Kerwin .323, Tyler Albright .316, Creighton Eldridge .307 and Hauser .301). Kerwin has garnered national attention with his recent play, having been named the NCBWA National Player of the Week, OVC Player of the Week and TSWA Player of the Week for his achievements at the plate last week.
Winston Cannon (4-3, 6.94 ERA) will get the nod in game one on Friday night. The probable starters for Saturday and Sunday’s contests have not yet been announced.
Jacksonville State (25-22, 12-12 OVC) is led offensively by infielder Clayton Daniel. The junior comes into the weekend hitting .335, while starting in all 47 games. Daniel has racked up 13 extra-base hits and has driven in 25 runs this season.
The Gamecocks are expected to go with LHP Derrick Adams on Friday (5-2, 5.00 ERA), while the visiting squad will send out RHP Colton Pate (1-6, 5.28 ERA) on Saturday and RHP Joe McGuire (7-1, 3.69 ERA) on Sunday.
