BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The Ohio Valley Conference announced today that the University of Tennessee at Martin was the recipient of the 2016-17 Team Sportsmanship Award for the sport of men’s golf.
This morning’s announcement marks the fourth straight OVC Team Sportsmanship Award to be sent the Skyhawks’ way. In the 12 seasons that the OVC Team Sportsmanship Award has been handed out, UT Martin has now won five times (2016-17, 2015-16, 2014-15, 2013-14, 2011-12).
“Our team takes great pride in winning this award,” Skyhawk head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “Sportsmanship is something that our team practices every time we play competitive golf – you just go out and treat people the way you wish to be treated. I stress that each player represents himself, UT Martin and our golf program. This award is special because it is voted on by the coaches and players and we accept with great humility.”
The OVC Team Sportsmanship Award is voted on by the student-athletes and coaches of their respective sports. The awards are bestowed upon the conference squads deemed to have best exhibited the standards of sportsmanship and ethical behavior as outlined by the OVC and NCAA. Included in the areas for evaluation are the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, staff administrators and fans.
This season, UT Martin became just the third OVC program to generate three straight medalists as Hunter Richardson won the league championship to advance to the NCAA Regional held in College Grove, Tenn. As a team, the Skyhawks won four tournaments while finishing in the top-five in nine of their 12 tournaments.
