MARTIN, Tenn. - With just four series left in Ohio Valley Conference play this season, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will look to continue their current six-game league winning streak, as they play host to in-state rival Austin Peay for a three-game set this Friday - Saturday, April 28-29. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 2 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader will start at 11 a.m..
The scorching hot Skyhawks are enjoying their best month in the tenure of third year head coach Rick Robinson. UT Martin (18-21, 7-11 OVC) is coming off a pair of weekend sweeps over Morehead State and SIU Edwardsville and with such few series left on the season and everyone vying for a spot in the OVC Tournament, holding serve at home is extremely important this time of year.
"When there is just four OVC series left, every game is very important right now," said Robinson. "We need to make sure we get as many of those wins at home as we can. We just have to continue to play like we have lately in conference play, and especially continue to play well here at home."
Senior Tanner Wessling has led the offensive charge of late for the Skyhawks, as he is in the midst of a 14-game hitting streak. The Kent, Wash. native has amassed a .421 average over that span, including racking up 24 hits, while driving in nine runs. Freshman Connor Aube continues to be the team's leading producer at the lead-off spot in conference play batting a team-high .338 in 18 conference games thus far.
The UT Martin rotation has really stepped up in the six-game OVC win streak as well. As a staff, the Skyhawks have notched a 2.67 ERA in that span, including a 2-0 record from freshman Winston Cannon, who did not allow an earned run in either start during the streak. Dalton Westfall was named the OVC Pitcher of the Week for the second time for his 11-strikeout performance in the Skyhawks' 3-1 win over SIUE this past Saturday, while Alex Evans notched two wins and a save over a five-game span a week ago. Peyton Cain also notched a win and a save for UT Martin last week.
Austin Peay (18-20, 9-11 OVC) is led by John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award finalist Alex Robles. The do-it-all senior is batting a team-high .368 on the season, while also racking up a 3-7 record on the mound, including striking out 58 hitters. Fellow senior Dre Gleason just passed the double-digit home run mark bringing his total to 10 on the year, while ranking third in the conference in RBI's with 48.
