The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will close out the non-conference portion of the team’s regular season schedule with a matchup against Southeastern Conference foe No. 18 Kentucky on Wednesday, April 26. First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 4 p.m. with tickets costing $5.
The Skyhawks (32-12) look to put a big punctuation mark on the team’s non-conference schedule against their third nationally ranked foe of the season – also played Ole Miss on two occasions – with a matchup against No. 18 ranked Kentucky. UT Martin has posted a 22-10 mark against non-conference foes this season while the team’s 32 overall wins ranks as the highest season output since winning 37 during the 2013 campaign.
UT Martin has won seven of its last nine games of the season while posting a .305 batting average and ranking second in the nation with 131 stolen bases. Senior Carly Gonzales paces the Skyhawks with a .381 batting average, 44 runs scored and 37 stolen bases after recently becoming just the fourth player in program history to eclipse 200 career base hits. Junior Jodie Duncan is also posting a career year, notching a .355 batting average along with four home runs and 34 RBIs – including a grand slam in a win over Eastern Kentucky last weekend.
In the pitching circle, the Skyhawks look to senior Brooke Kennedy (17-4, 2.73 ERA) who tied her previous single-season high with her 17th win of the season against Eastern Kentucky. Kennedy paces the team with 24 appearances while notching 15 complete games and two shutouts in 131 innings of work.
No. 18 Kentucky (30-13) enters the weekend as winners of four straight after tallying a victory over Indiana and a three-game sweep of Missouri. The Wildcats are in the midst of playing five games in six days and are led offensively by Katie Reed with a .349 batting average and 52 hits on the season. Meanwhile Abbey Cheek has posted a .346 batting average with 10 home runs and 32 RBs.
Wednesday will also feature the return of hometown product Meagan Prince to Martin. Prince serves as the team’s ace, compiling a 15-6 overall record along with a 1.47 ERA in 133 innings of work. She has also tallied a pair of shutouts and four saves out of the bullpen while ranking in the SEC top-10 in innings pitched, strikeouts, wins and saves.
