MARTIN, Tenn. – In the 74th-76th installment of their longtime rivalry, the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will welcome Ohio Valley Conference opponent Morehead State to Skyhawk Field April 7-9 for a three-game set in hopes of getting back into conference tournament contention. First pitch for Friday night’s contest is scheduled for 6 p.m., while Saturday has a 3 p.m. starting time and Sunday’s matinee is set to begin at 1 p.m.
The Eagles have had the upper hand in the series of late, taking two out of three a season ago, while holding an all-time advantage of 57-16 over the Skyhawks. Under the direction of head coach Mike McGuire, Morehead State has compiled an impressive 22-7 record in 2017 including taking eight out of their first nine OVC games and winning nine of their last 10 overall coming into this weekend’s series.
The UT Martin (9-16, 1-11 OVC) bats look to get back on track after a tough two-game stretch against Eastern Kentucky and Vanderbilt in which the Skyhawks were shut out in both contests. Tyler Albright (.365 BA, eight doubles, 19 RBI’s) remains a steady force in the Skyhawk lineup and will lead an offense into battle against a tough Eagle rotation. Also for UT Martin, Josh Hauser enjoyed his best output of the season last weekend against Eastern Kentucky, including belting a career-high three doubles on Friday night.
Morehead State (22-7, 8-1 OVC) has been on a tear in conference play recently notching sweeps against Eastern Kentucky and Southeast Missouri, while also taking two out of three versus Belmont. Offensively, a pair of sluggers pace the Eagle lineup, as Braxton Morris comes into the weekend batting .416, with 10 doubles and 25 RBI’s on the season, followed closely by teammate Will Schneider. The senior outfielder has also notched a stellar average of .409, while leading the Eagles in hits with 47.
A trio of lefties are expected to be the probable starters for Morehead State as Aaron Leasher (5-0, 3.83 ERA) is expected to get the nod on Friday night, while Dalton Stambaugh (1-1, 6.82 ERA) and Curtis Wilson (4-2, 3.51 ERA) will take the mound on Saturday and Sunday.
Fans are encouraged to tune into the OVC Digital Network on Friday night to watch the action. Live stats will be available for the remaining two games and all links can be found at the top of the page.
