CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The defending Ohio Valley Conference champion University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team kept rolling this afternoon, winning its 10th consecutive match with a 6-1 triumph at Southeast Missouri.
The Skyhawks improve to 10-3 overall while extending their perfect OVC record to 6-0. The 10-match winning streak now stands alone as the second-longest in program history, trailing only the 12-match win streak from 2005.
UT Martin secured the early edge with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Sarah Candeloro and Jemima Potter picked up a 6-4 victory at No. 1 while Burcu Tari and Andrea Plantada Cortes accumulated a 6-1 win at No. 3. The Skyhawks’ No. 2 squad of Hitomi Naito and Asel Jumamukhambetova also led 5-2 but the match was stopped after UT Martin already clinched the team point.
Candeloro got the upper hand at No. 1 singles, emerging with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Jumamukhambetova followed with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 3 before Plantada Cortes capped the team win at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Elina Geut added to the win with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory at No. 6 while Tari claimed a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3) win at No. 4.
UT Martin now returns home for its final three matches of the regular season. The homestand begins with a Friday, April 7 matchup against OVC foe Jacksonville State, as first serve from Skyhawk Varsity Courts is set for 1 p.m.
