NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A strong outing from starting Commodore pitcher Chandler Day proved to be too much as the University of Tennessee at Martin dropped an 11-0 decision to Southeastern Conference opponent Vanderbilt on Tuesday night.
The Skyhawks (9-16) and Commodores were both held scoreless by their opposition through two innings, before Vanderbilt pushed across a trio of runs in the third on a balk by UT Martin pitcher Jake Patzner and an RBI-groundout from the top Commodore hitter Julian Infante to make the score 3-0 in favor of the home team.
Ty Duvall brought home a pair of runs for Vanderbilt in the sixth inning on a two-run double to extend the lead to 5-0. The Commodores followed that up with two more in the seventh on a two-run base hit from Reed Hayes to push the lead to 7-0.
Vanderbilt (19-11) used a five-hit effort in the bottom half of the eighth to score four more runs and extend the lead into double digits, before closing out the Skyhawks in the ninth for the 11-0 win.
It was a tough night for the UT Martin offense as they only were able to manage two hits in the contest. Ryan Helgren (1-3) and JoJo Allen were the lone Skyhawks that recorded hits (both singles).
Keylen Steen put in a solid effort behind the plate nabbing a pair of Commodore baserunners who were attempting to steal second.
Dom Bazzani got the start for UT Martin, but was limited to just 1.1 innings pitched. Patzner (1-3) relieved the lefty and saw the most work on the night (2.2 innings), but was hit with the loss. In addition, Shane Seckinger (1.2), Kyle Laberge (1.1) and Alex Evans (1.0) all saw work out of the bullpen. Day (5-0) notched the win for Vanderbilt.
The Skyhawks return to Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend as they host Morehead State in a three-game set at Skyhawk Field beginning on Friday, April 7 at 6 p.m.
