JONESBORO, Ark. – The University of Tennessee at Martin golf team battled rain and high winds today to rank third in the field of 16 teams after two rounds at the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate.
The Skyhawks briefly led during both rounds before finishing with a 592 (+16) on the day. UT Martin shot a 297 (+9) this morning before carding a 295 (+7) during the afternoon round. The Skyhawks lead the tournament with 108 pars and rank second in the field in par-4 scoring (4.27, +27), trailing only the Arkansas State “B” squad (589, +13) and the Arkansas State main team (590, +14) on the team leaderboard.
“We produced some very good scores considering the tough conditions today,” UT Martin head coach Jerry Carpenter said. “After about three holes this morning, it rained for almost two hours. After the rain finally let up, the wind was gusting at about 25 to 35 miles per hour but with that said, we hung in there and really finished strong. We are sitting just a couple of strokes out of the lead – which is right where we want to be going into tomorrow.”
Pacing the Skyhawks today was junior Hunter Richardson, whose even-par 144 ranks third out of 85 golfers in the event. The Clarksville, Tenn. native was tied for the lead after the first round with a 70 before securing a 74 this afternoon. He leads the tournament in par-4 scoring (4.00, E) while also adding seven birdies and a second-round eagle (on the 371-yard par-4 Hole No. 3).
Austin Swafford is tied for 10th place with a total score of 148 (+4). The senior accumulated a 75 this morning before posting a 73 in the second round. He was responsible for a team-best eight birdies today – including four in the span of six holes in the first round.
Tyler Guy and Jack Story also rank in the top-20 in the field. Guy rode a team-high 25 pars into a 149 (+5) today, shooting a 74 this morning and a 75 this afternoon. Story followed an opening round 78 with a 73 in the second round, finishing with a 151 (+7). Gavin Shellnut (78-76) completed UT Martin’s team scoring with a 154 (+10) today.
Of the five golfers competing as individuals, Skyhawk junior Zach Haynes tallied the best score on the day with a 153 (+9). He began his day with a 76 before finishing up with a 77 this afternoon.
The third and final round will take place at RidgePointe Country Club with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 4. The five UT Martin golfers in the scoring lineup are paired with Arkansas State and Missouri State while Haynes is paired up with Eastern Illinois.
