MURRAY, Ky. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team made it nine consecutive victories today, extending its winning streak with a 6-1 triumph at Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State.
The nine-match win streak is tied for the second-longest stretch since the program joined the Division-I ranks in 1992. The Skyhawks also posted nine straight wins in 2006, a year after UT Martin notched a school-record 12 consecutive victories in 2005.
Today’s win also kept the Skyhawks with a perfect record in league play, as UT Martin improves to 5-0 with a 9-3 overall mark.
Burcu Tari and Andrea Plantada Cortes posted a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles to start off the day. After Murray State evened the match with a win at No. 2, the No. 1 Skyhawk team of Sarah Candeloro and Jemima Potter dialed up a 6-4 victory – resulting in a point for UT Martin.
In singles, Asel Jumamukhambetova amassed a 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 to ignite the Skyhawk momentum. Moments later, Tari emerged victorious at No. 2 (6-3, 6-2) while Plantada Cortes clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5. Candeloro won by a 6-1, 7-6 (5) at No. 1 while Naito put the finishing touch on the victory with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (3) tiebreaker win at No. 2.
UT Martin has a quick turnaround before its next match, as it makes the short trek to Southeast Missouri on Tuesday, April 4.
