RICHMOND, Ky. – A big third inning for Eastern Kentucky (16-12, 3-5) proved costly for the University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team as the home team defeated the Skyhawks by a score of 11-3 in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Colonels scored four runs in the inning to break a 2-2 tie and held on from there to claim the victory.
Eastern Kentucky (16-12, 3-5 OVC) jumped out to a lead in the first inning on an NCAA-leading 14th home run from Colonel first baseman Ben Fisher. EKU pushed across another run in the second on an RBI-groundout from Brenden Overton to give them the early 2-0 advantage.
UT Martin (9-13, 1-10 OVC) responded with a pair of runs of their own in the top half of the third inning. Senior Tyler Albright brought home Ben Aslett on an RBI-sacrifice fly to right field, followed by a Connor Aube run scored on a Colonel fielding error to knot the score 2-2.
However, the Colonels took back the lead in the bottom half of the inning, pushing across four runs on five total singles to make the score 6-2.
Aslett used a sacrifice fly of his own to bring home catcher Keylen Steen in the top of the fourth to cut into the Colonel lead and trim the margin to 6-3. The score remained the same until EKU pushed across an insurance run in the sixth inning, as Overton scampered home on a wild pitch from UT Martin starter Dalton Westfall to extend the lead to 7-3.
The Colonels would tack on four more runs in the eight on six hits to put the finishing touches on the 11-3 win. Westfall (3-3) tossed six innings, striking out three hitters in his third loss of the season. Nick Laster (1-0) tossed three relief innings for Eastern Kentucky in his first win on the year.
Tyler Albright (2-4) and Robert Worley (2-4) were the two Skyhawks with multiple hits in the contest, as Albright (20) and Aslett (3) each recorded RBI’s in the loss.
The series finale is set for tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
