The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will return to Ohio Valley Conference play with a doubleheader at league rival SIUE on Saturday, April 1. First pitch from Cougar Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Skyhawks (24-8, 3-1 OVC) enter the weekend riding a four-game winning streak including a victory over Jacksonville State, a sweep of Tennessee Tech and win against Middle Tennessee earlier in the week. The squad boasts one of the league’s most dangerous offenses by pacing the OVC in runs (207), doubles (52), stolen bases (97), batting average (.327) and on-base percentage (.413).
Junior Jodie Duncan paces the team with a .378 batting average while tallying three home runs and 23 RBIs. Classmate Savannah Dodson also ranks amongst team leaders with a .377 batting average while the trio of Renate Meckl, Gracyn McBride and Alli Fulcher leads the squad with four home runs each.
Brooke Kennedy (11-2, 3.10 ERA) leads the team while looking to pick up her 40th career victory to move into sole possession of fifth place on the school’s all-time wins list. Look for either Sara Hooten (6-3, 3.02 ERA) or Seeley Layne (3-1, 2.69 ERA) to also earned a start against the Cougars.
SIUE (26-6, 3-1 OVC) has won six of its last seven contests – including a 4-0 victory over Southern Illinois its last time out. The Cougars are paced offensively by Zoe Schafer with a .375 batting average while tallying three home runs and 17 RBIs. Allison Smiley leads the squad with 27 RBIs while Alyssa Heren paces the Cougars with four home runs and 16 stolen bases.
In a highly contested series, SIUE holds a narrow advantage over UT Martin in matchup history with a mark of 13-12. The Skyhawks will look to pick up their first win at Cougar Field since 2013.
