MARTIN, Tenn. – For the second time in three days, the University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team made short work of an Ohio Valley Conference opponent, as the Skyhawks posted a 7-0 victory over Tennessee State this afternoon.
UT Martin’s win was its seventh straight, as the Skyhawks improved to 7-3 overall with a 3-0 OVC record. Today’s decision also marked the 22nd consecutive win for UT Martin in the all-time series against Tennessee State.
Sarah Candeloro and Jemima Potter won their fifth straight doubles match at No. 1, compiling a 6-0 victory. At No. 2, Hitomi Naito and Asel Jumamukhambetova joined forces for a point-clinching 6-1 win while Burcu Tari and Andrea Plantada Cortes were ahead by a 5-1 margin at No. 3.
In singles action, Plantada Cortes earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 to get things going for the Skyhawks. Naito followed that with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 while Candeloro’s 6-4, 6-1 triumph at No. 1 officially sealed the win for UT Martin. At No. 6, Elina Geut came away with a 6-1, 6-2 victory before both Tari [6-3, 7-6 (5)] and Jumamukhambetova [6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (5)] extended their singles winning streaks to seven with wins at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
UT Martin goes on the road next weekend, traveling to OVC rivals Murray State on Friday, March 31 and Austin Peay on Saturday, April 1.
