DOVER, Del. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team held an early lead in its consolation round matchup against top-seeded Fresno State but the Bulldogs mounted a comeback in a 11-4 setback for the Skyhawks at the United Equestrian Conference tournament.
Things started out well for UT Martin (2-7), as the Skyhawks raced out to a 3-1 lead after equitation over fences. Ally Scholefield (162 points), Randi LaChance (157) and Monica Zoromski (129) each won their head-to-head matchups while Claire Ottinger (140) came up just a single point shy of a tie, nearly securing a sweep in the discipline for UT Martin.
In reining, Liana Nowak pieced together a 147.5-point ride to tally a team point for the Skyhawks. Madeline Williams (147.5 points) finished only 0.5 points behind her competitor while Megan Aiosa (141.5) and Bobbie Piddock (140) also represented UT Martin in the event.
The competition was knotted at 4-all headed into the final two disciplines but Fresno State nabbed the final seven points awarded. In horsemanship, Jade Bleskey (147 points) came away with a tie while Nowak (136), Piddock (131) and Brittany Woodard (128.5) also participated for the Skyhawks.
Ottinger’s 144 ranked as a team-high for UT Martin in equitation on the flat. LaChance secured a score of 130 while Zoromski and Sydney Lintner tallied scores of 124 and 103, respectively.
