DOVER, Del. – The University of Tennessee at Martin equestrian team battled throughout but could not come away with a win as No. 8 SMU claimed an 11-3 win in the opening round of the United Equestrian Conference championships.

Seeded No. 3 in the event, the Skyhawks will take on No. 1 seed Fresno State at 9 a.m. CST on Saturday, March 25. Fresno State was upset by host No. 4 seed Delaware State, 8-7, in today’s first round.

UT Martin performed well in reining, winning two points and tying another head-to-head matchup. Liana Nowak tallied 143.5 points to earn a team point while Bobbie Piddock accumulated 142.5 points to claim another team point. Megan Aiosa was responsible for the best score (144.5 points) in the event, tying Jaclyn White from SMU. Madeline Williams also added a solid score of 142.5 points for the Skyhawks but she fell by a single point.

Claire Ottinger accounted for UT Martin’s lone point in equitation over fences, piling up 128 points. Monica Zoromski (141 points), Ally Scholefield (131) and Randi LaChance (60) also took part in the event for the Skyhawks.

In equitation on the flat, Sydney Lintner dueled SMU’s Vivian Yowan to a tie with 126 points apiece. Ottinger (124), LaChance (121) and Zoromski (109) also represented UT Martin in the event.

The Skyhawks piled up four close decisions in horsemanship but would not amass a team point. Jade Bleskey led UT Martin with 142 points while Brittany Woodard followed closely behind with 141.5 points. Nowak and Piddock came away with 137.5 points and 128.5 points, respectively, for the Skyhawks.
