MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team won its sixth consecutive match this afternoon, turning away Ohio Valley Conference rival Belmont by a 7-0 margin in its home opener at Skyhawk Varsity Courts.
With the win, UT Martin improved to 6-3 overall with a 2-0 league mark. The Skyhawks won both doubles decisions before notching an impressive sweep of all six head-to-head singles matchups.
The No. 1 UT Martin doubles team of Sarah Candeloro and Jemima Potter got things started with a 6-1 victory. The Skyhawk duo of Burcu Tari and Andrea Plantada Cortes then came away with a 7-5 win at No. 3 to award the first point of the match to UT Martin.
Elina Geut ignited the Skyhawks’ singles surge with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6. Asel Jumamukhambetova polished off a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 and was followed by a 6-2, 7-5 win by Plantada Cortes at No. 5. The next three singles decisions were each decided by come-from-behind tiebreaking wins, starting with Candeloro’s 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (7) triumph at No. 1. UT Martin wrapped up the sweep with a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (6) win by Hitomi Naito at No. 2 and a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4) from Tari at No. 3.
The Skyhawks will look to continue their momentum on Sunday, March 26 when they host OVC foe Tennessee State. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
