MARTIN, Tenn. – The defending Ohio Valley Conference champion and preseason favorite University of Tennessee at Martin tennis team opens league play on Saturday, March 18 when it travels to Eastern Kentucky at 10 a.m.
The Skyhawks are in the midst of a four-match winning streak, heading into their OVC schedule with a 4-3 overall record. UT Martin is 22-6 all-time against the Colonels and boasts a 19-5 all-time mark in OVC openers.
During the Skyhawks’ current winning streak, the team has posted a 14-4 singles record to go along with a 9-2 doubles mark. Asel Jumamukhambetova (4-0 at No. 4), Andrea Plantada Cortes (3-0 at No. 5) and Burcu Tari (2-0 at No. 3) are each undefeated in singles action while the duo of Jumamukhambetova and Hitomi Naito have posted a perfect 4-0 mark at No. 2 doubles.
On the season, Sarah Candeloro, Jumamukhambetova and Tari each have a team-high four singles victories. Candeloro has been the only Skyhawk to compete at No. 1, posting a 4-1 record while Jumamukhambetova and Tari have helped UT Martin post a 5-1 record at No. 4. In doubles, the Jumamukhambetova/Naito tandem lead the squad with four wins while Plantada/Cortes (No. 3) and Candeloro/Jemima Potter (No. 1) each boast three victories.
Eastern Kentucky is 4-6 heading into this weekend, as the Colonels will also host OVC rival Southeast Missouri on Friday before Saturday’s match. Laura Argente was named to the Preseason All-OVC Top 10 list while Sagung Putri Dwinta accounts for a team-high six singles wins this spring. Kristina Lagoda and Marina Marti lead the Colonels with four doubles wins at No. 3.
