PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Tennessee at Martin tennis squad emerged victorious for the fourth straight match this afternoon, turning away West Florida by a 6-3 margin.
The Skyhawks (4-3) pushed their winning streak to four after taking two of three doubles points and four of six singles matches against a West Florida squad that is ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division-II. The match wrapped up a stretch of four matches in six days during UT Martin’s annual Spring Break trip.
Hitomi Naito and Asel Jumamukhambetova got things started with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, extending their spring record to 4-0. The Skyhawk duo of Sarah Candeloro and Jemima Potter followed suit with a 9-7 win at No. 1.
In singles play, Andrea Plantada Cortes earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5 while Burcu Tari won her fourth straight singles decision at No. 3 by a 6-0, 6-4 margin. Candeloro and Jumamukhambetova then came away with gritty tiebreaker wins, as Candeloro won 7-6 (5), 3-6, 1-0 at No. 1 and Jumamukhambetova was responsible for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 comeback win at No. 4.
UT Martin officially begins its Ohio Valley Conference championship defense on Saturday, March 18 when it travels to Eastern Kentucky. First serve from Richmond, Ky. is scheduled for 2 p.m.
