The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will look to continue its hot start to the season with a spring break trip out to sunny California with five games at the Highlander Classic hosted by UC Riverside beginning on Thursday, March 9-11.
The Skyhawks (15-3) will play a doubleheader against tournament host UC Riverside on Thursday, March 9 beginning at 1:30 p.m. CST with Game Two to follow. The squad will then officially open the tournament field on Friday, March 10 against Maryland at 11 a.m. before matching up against Iona (11 a.m.) and Weber State (1:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
UT Martin enters the weekend ranking amongst the nation’s best in several statistical categories. The Skyhawks rank second nationally in stolen bases per game (3.61), fourth in doubles per game (1.94), ninth in batting average (.358), 10th in scoring (7.33), 13th in on base percentage (.444) and 25th in slugging percentage (.514). The speedster duo of Carly Gonzales (18) and Savannah Dodson (14) also rank sixth and 19th, respectively, in stolen bases.
Offensively the team is paced by Dodson who leads the team with a .439 batting average while tallying four doubles, a triple, two home runs and nine RBIs. Rachel Williams is also riding a hot start, notching a .389 batting average with four doubles, a home run and 19 RBIs. Jodie Duncan leads the team with three home runs while tallying 18 RBIs.
Inside the circle, UT Martin is led by senior righty Brooke Kennedy. Kennedy is 7-1 on the season with a 3.60 ERA in 48.2 innings of work while striking out 42. Samantha Scott (3-0, 1.21 ERA), Sara Hooten (2-1, 2.80 ERA) and Seeley Layne (2-1, 2.25 ERA) are also expected to see action.
UT Martin possesses a combined record of 2-4 against the tournament field with wins over both Maryland and Iona in series history.
