The University of Tennessee at Martin softball team will look to stay hot after notching one of the best starts in program history when traveling to participate in the four-game Red & Blue Classic hosted by Ole Miss beginning on Friday, March 3-5.
The Skyhawks (12-2) will match up against Nicholls State to start the tournament against Nicholls State (12-6) on Friday at 12:30 p.m. before matching up against Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay (5-4) at 3 p.m. UT Martin will then take on Mississippi Valley State (2-11) at Saturday at 10 a.m. before closing out the field against Southeastern Conference host Ole Miss (13-2) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
UT Martin currently ranks in the nation’s top-25 in nine statistical categories including stolen bases per game (3.54, second), on base percentage (.459, sixth), scoring (7.92), batting average (.364, 10th) and doubles per game (1.92, 13th). The Skyhawks have outscored their opponents 111-37 so far this season while posting a 2.74 pitching team ERA.
The Skyhawks boast a starting lineup which features all 10 bats with at least a .300 batting average along with three players in Renate Meckl (.455), Savannah Dodson (.433) and Alli Fulcher (.405) hitting over .400. The junior duo of Jodie Duncan and Rachel Williams lead the team with 17 RBIs a piece while Fulcher ranks third with 13 RBIs. On the basepaths the Skyhawks lead the OVC with 51 stolen bases, paced by Carly Gonzales with 12, Dodson with nine and Alicia Hansen with eight.
Brooke Kennedy (6-1, 3.23 ERA) paces a pitching staff in wins, appearances, starts, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts. Sara Hooten (2-1, 2.62) has started four games on the season while the Skyhawks look for freshmen Samantha Scott (2-0, 1.35 ERA) and Seeley Layne (1-0, 0.00 ERA) to see action.
UT Martin is a combined 82-42 against the tournament field. The Skyhawks are 3-5 against Nicholls State, 67-27 against Austin Peay, 8-2 against Mississippi Valley State and 4-8 against Ole Miss.
